Osborne House - Isle of Wight

 United Kingdom - England-Isle of Wight-Cowes
Stayed overnight on the Isle of Wight and the main reason was to visit Osborne use summer house and retreat of Queen Victoria . The Queen in fact dies here on 22 January 1901. This postcard shows the drawing room as it was in 1946. The house itself is not really that grand , but got lots of the original furniture still intact.

This card was posted when I got back to Portsmouth as I was not near a Post office during my time on the Isle of Wight.

HMS Victory - Portsmouth

 Europe-United Kingdom-England-Portsmouth
I liked this card when visiting the museum shop on board The Victory . It is preserved very well and gives a very good understand what is was like to live on these sailing ship. The largest ship in the Royal Navy fleet when commissioned in 1778 .

Mailed in Portsmouth without a postmark.

Portsmouth - UK

 Europe-United Kingdom-England-Portsmouth
My first time here and I had wanted to visit for such a long time . It certainly lived up to expectations. There is so much to see in the area of the Naval Dockyard. Different museums and the harbour area has been all cleaned up with shopping and plenty of places to eat. This area is a World Heritage Site.

As ever in many European countries and especially UK getting a selection of stamps from the Post office is near impossible. All Definitive stamps in the UK carry a barcode exactly like Germany.

Giants Causeway- World Heritage Site

 Europe-United Kingdom-Northern Ireland
This is a unusual view of the Giants Causeway on the Antrim coast. From the air. A nice warm day here packed with tourists. This is the only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland.

There is a postbox at the Giants Causeway. But did not drop it there due to the changes of not getting postmarked. So on the coast was in a beautiful village of Cushendun.  The girl in the Post office told me it was her first day and had no stamps ! I had already bought the stamps previously. My only request was the card to be postmarked at the post office  and go in the mail . This also has the machine cancel .

This is taken on the Giants Causeway. A beautiful day

Rathlin Island - Northern Ireland

 Europe-United Kingdom-Northern Ireland-Rathlin Island
An Island I wanted to visit for some time . This is in the area of the North of Northern Ireland. Took a 30 minute ride on a boat . Stayed about 4 hours on the island and it was very interesting with a  small museum . The Puffins shown here are only there from April to July, so were gone when I arrived. Still a nice location to walk

Nice to see a local postmark . A small post office on the island and some new stamps .

Bushmills Distillery - Northern Ireland

 Europe-United Kingdom-Northern Ireland-Bushmills
The is the oldest whiskey distillery in the World. Granted a license in 1608. A wonderful tour lasts about 90 mins and very interesting. Something to taste at the end of course....

Posted this at a magical Post Office in the village of Bushmills. Very helpful staff and some " Special " stamps as they call them in the UK for sale.

Northern Ireland - United Kingdom

Europe-Northern Ireland-United Kingdom I bought this card during my visit to Mount Stewart House and Gardens. . It has a number of heritage sites to visit . Many of these I am not familiar with so this card works well as a future tourist planner.

I managed to get the postmaster to postmark my cards for this trip . I was tired of UK cards coming back with no postmarks. Featuring new wildlife stamps.

East Grinstead - England

Europe-United Kingdom-England-East Grinstead. The High Street contains one of the longest continuous runs of 14th-century-timber-framed buildings in England. It was a joy to be here on the day the village turns out for the May fair. The village is beautiful and very east to walk around. Some of my family live nearby and even though I have travelled wide and far , the welcome here is just amazing.

At least this card did get a postmark , however it hard to see. Posted in the local postbox . More flowers from the Kings first special issue.

London - England - United Kingdom . King's first special stamps

 Europe-United Kingdom-England-London
Just love this postcard. Great memories of that number 15 bus that I went on from Marble Arch , The red post box and the underground sign that is so iconic. Come to think of it I don't know if I ever used a phone box in London?
The first special issue stamps from the United Kingdom showing the King's Head . Facing right , The Queen's head faced left. No postmark .

King Charles III London - United Kingdom

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London Today is the day of King Charles Coronation. I was in London last week and it was not easy finding a card of the King. I guess more will appear soon.

Another first here . This being the first time I have used a definitive stamp of the King. It was all change as on this trip visited the new Philatelic office at Broadway . Unfortunately as is the usual now this stamp received no postmark.

London - United Kingdom

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London Was here for a weekend visit . Being winter it was dark early so this postcard gives a feel for London at night. I had been here a few months before for the Queen's funeral . I could not find a postcard of The Queen anywhere . Enjoyed London as always.

Very pleased to see that this postcard did get a postcard. Rare on my last UK postcards. I in fact posted at Gatwick Airport . Perhaps that was the trick .

Newcastle Co.Down , Northern Ireland

 Europe-Northern Ireland-Newcastle-Co.Down
I had not spend much time in this part of Northern Ireland before . It is on the East side just after the border. A seaside area with beautiful surrounding countryside.

As I have said before finding regional stamps in Northern Ireland is not easy. I was lucky to find this stamp in a remote Post Office. This stamp was only issued in later 2020 .

Europe-United Kingdom-Northern Ireland-Co.Down . This is the hotel I stayed in . It is very famous and was opened in 1898  when Newcastle was a railway stop on the Dublin-Belfast line. No longer there. But the Slieve Donard Hotel certainly is. Nearby attractions include the scenic Donard Park, beach and promenade.

Featuring stamps with Paul McCarthy of the Beatles and Wings fame. I think I had the Ram album on the right when we all had LPs and record players.

Mountains of Mourne - Northern Ireland

Europe-United Kingdom-Northern Ireland-Co. Down  This is the beautiful Mountains of Mourne. I had never been before despite that I am only living less then 2 hours away. Spend a few days here as part of the holidays in June 2021 . Lovely to get away .

The Philatelic section in Belfast has a very poor selection of stamps. Managed to get these Paul McCarthy stamps. I think I had bought that LP when it came out. Hard to see the postmark with the dark stamp.

Postal Museum London

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London I got this card during my visit to the Postal Museum in London. It is a two part location. The first part is the museum which is disappointing. It had very little in Philatelic displays. The second part of the visit was to the nearby underground postal railway. That was a treat and loved it. This card is showing a sorting machine at Mount Pleasant office in 1937. I love the yellow coats.

This was the one of the stamp options that I could purchase at the Postal museum I was surprised to find no Post Office Philatelic Counter. So just labels. Here you can see it says on the label The Postal Museum. I did mail this in a special box , but no special cancellation. I am less than impressed.

London Transport Museum

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London This card is from the London Transport museum. This is the first printed version of Harry Beck's now world famous Underground map. 1933. The museum itself is very interesting with Buses, Underground transport and Trams all relating to London .

Unless you go to a large Post Office , United Kingdom Post Offices do not sell special stamps. This is peel and stick stamp I purchased as you can see on the label from the Postal Museum.

State Rooms- Buckingham Palace

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London This is the very impressive State room in Buckingham Palace. I have been to a lot of Palaces that are open to the public. This one is very well maintained and is stunning. I suspect the key reason is that it is in reality in use with the exception of the 6 weeks it is open to the public in the summer.

This card does have a postmark which for me is now rare in the UK.

Buckingham Palace

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London  This is Buckingham Palace , the home of The Queen . I am not normally in London at this time of year, but on this occasion I was able to visit the State rooms.

United Kingdom is famous for its Machin Definitive stamps , which have been on sale since the 1960s. Most Post offices only sell these stamps and as is often the case the card is not postmarked.

National Portrait Gallery London

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London I have always wanted to visit the National Portrait Gallery which is the largest in the world, but never got around to it. On this trip I made it and it is well worth while. In my opinion most of the best pictures are the Kings and Queens of England . Here is Queen Elizabeth the First. This is from around 1592. Fantastic painting. The Queen reigned from 1533-1603. One of the early works in the Gallery

Another double cancellation, but better then the usual none. The stamp features a Eurasian Beaver which is an Endangered species.

ABBA - London Exhibition

Europe-United Kingdom-England-London While in London I visited the wonderful ABBA exhibition . Telling the story and the song that really started it for them Waterloo in 1974 winning the Eurovision Song Contest. I remember that night . So since ABBA are in the news with two new songs to be released later this year, I think it is great to have a card showing some of the outfits they appeared in . 1970s. Great exhibition and love the music.

The stamp is a recent issue showing endangered species. I got the Post office to cancel this by hand before I posted it as the UK has a very poor reputation for postmarking mail and often just uses a pen ! On this occasion it got the standard cancel as well .
