Melbourne Australia

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Melbourne My second time here. A very nice city . Main reason here was to visit a member of my family. Love the trams

I went to the main Post Office in Melbourne. I have to say very impressive for a modern set up. Very helpful staff and a philatelic and coin display . Seen these Bird stamps , beautiful .

Australia - Adelaide to Alice Sprigs

Australia 1992. From Adelaide to Alice Sprigs  on the Ghan. A great trip. Now it goes as far as Darwin. Great memories

Sydney - Australia

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Sydney  One of the beautiful cities of the world. Taking the ferry from Circular Quay past the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge day or night is one of those scenes you never forget.

The Postmarks in Australia can be disappointing. Included here is a stamp from the miniature sheet to commemorate the Queen's 90th birthday.

Brisbane - Australia

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Brisbane  My starting point on this Pacific journey. Brisbane is a lively and impressive city. The river is wonderful and well worth taking a trip on.

Visited the GPO in Brisbane . A old Colonial building . But inside modern . A selection of stamps available at the philatelic counter.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Brisbane  Always wanted to visit here. It has many animals not just Koalas. Kangaroos and  Emus were also here. Enjoyed a half day here which included taking a photo with the Koala in my arms. A great day.

A set of stamps celebrating Australia in World War 1. Hard to read the cancellations on these stamps.

Arriving in Brisbane on the first stage of this Pacific trip. Enjoyed this city , full of life.

This is the GPO in Brisbane. A full selection of stamps available at the post office. However not allowed to take photos inside .

Fremantle and Christmas Island

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Fremantle  The old part of town looked very historic. Here you see part of the main street and the beautiful colonial buildings from the early 1900s.

Got the stamps for the Post office in Perth , but a different red cancellation .

Indian Ocean-Christmas Island-Settlement  This is showing a view over the main Settlement which is the town were the original settlers started. Phosphate is still a big business here and you can see the same large cranes here that can be seen in Nauru. Maybe there is a connection there with both Nauru and Christmas Island having a Australian detention centre for immigrants. Was here during Chinese New Year and is a  holiday on this Island due to the large Chinese population.

Luckily the Post office was open Saturday morning while I was here. A busy post office. They hand out both Christmas Island stamps and Australian here. A full selection of Christmas Island stamps are available for purchase. The post office postmarks the mail when you hand it back. Two  nice cancellations.

Indian Ocean-Christmas Island-Settlement   I was not here during the high season for crabs when they migrate back to the sea. That is the rainy season from November/December.  However there were still plenty of crabs about. Had to be careful when driving as I did not wish to go over them . A great red colour . By the way the crabs are not edible. Loved driving around the island . It  has one of the best beaches in Australia- Dolly beach. No one there so one does not even need a bathing suit...

Lots of nice Crab stamps here. Christmas Island every year issues a Chinese new  year set of stamps. Now I can understand why with having a holiday for the Chinese near year.

Perth and Fremantle- Australia

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Perth  Back in Perth for this trip and great weather. An enjoyable city for a few days but does not live up to Sydney my favourite city in Oz. Still very walkable and interesting.

Wished it was a better postmark. A nice set of stamps. The Post office had quite a good selection and were very helpful. A big building right in the centre of town.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Fremantle  Visited this prison which is a World Heritage site. The Guide was excellent in explaining the use of the prison  up to the 1980s. Took the Ferry up and the train back to Perth. A very nice harbour.

I had purchased these stamps in Perth, so just used the letterbox. A different postmark then the one in Perth. A set of Ship stamps that had just been released.

Perth Australia

The GPO in Perth.

However the Post Office today is a very small part compared to what it once was
I was surprised and delighted to see this sign outside my hotel.  When I was first here in 1990 , I recall a Irish sign outside my hotel when I got up for breakfast. I thought it was jet lag seeing this in Australia of all places.  By pure chance I stayed at the same hotel this time.

Lord Howe Island, Australia and 3 World Heritage Sites.

Pacific Ocean-Lord Howe Island  What a Beautiful Island to visit. It has all you want, with great beaches and just an amazing place. It is quite an expensive flight from Sydney but worth it. This Island is also a World Heritage Site. The hotel gave me a Bicycle to get around. Good way to see the Island, but oh my ,my legs did hurt. Have not cycled in years ! Somehow the pain was worth it. An Outstanding Island.

Lord Howe Issues its own local courier stamps, for use in local mail. So here we have the courier stamps on the left. The next day to the Post office and sent international from there. Very nice postmark.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Sydney  The Iconic Opera House , also a World Heritage site. I had been in here a number of times in the past. The red sky you see here is the same colour I did see when in Tasmania. Sydney one of my favourite cities in the world.

This stamp features the Royal Exhibition Hall in Melbourne which is also a World Heritage site. I have not visited that hall as when I was in Melbourne previously it was not inscribed then.  A laser printed postmark. Not very fond of those postmarks.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Katoomba  This is the Blue Mountains. I had wanted to visit before but never got the chance. You have a mix of the Cable car and the Railway which is quite steep. Still some great views and glad I visited. Also a World Heritage Site.

Another laser printed Postmark. Posted in a mail box at the Blue Mountains.
