Hammershus - Bornholm

Europe-Denmark-Bornholm Hammershus is the main tourist attraction on the island of Bornholm. Took a local bus which takes about one hour from the main town, as it goes on a slight detour. But good to see some of the island . This medieval fortification is the largest in Northern Europe and dates from the 13th century. It is very interesting and is situated on the coast with a good view over the sea. Enjoyable day trip with a nice cafe and shop nearby .

No postboxes in this area of the island. I mailed this in the main town later the same day .

Bornholm - Denmark

 Europe-Denmark-Bornholm-Ronne
This is the main town on the Danish island of Bornholm. It is situated in the Baltic sea and off the south coast of Sweden. Spend a day here and travelled by bus .

Stamps in Denmark are expensive. The local supermarket sold post office supplies and stamps. You get what you are given. The postmark is from the central sorting office in Denmark .

Copenhagen - Denmark

Europe-Denmark-Copenhagen It is quite some time since I have been back in the city of the Mermaid . I retraced some of my steps with stops in places and locations I had remembered . This area is known as Nyhavn and is very picturesque with colourful buildings. Most now bars and restaurants

Denmark is one of those countries that have no Post offices any longer. I know that The Netherlands is the same. I did manage to visit the head office but they only take in pre paid parcels and dont sell stamps ! I was directed to a small untidy sweet shop that sold stamps . At least the stamps they sold me were quite nice showing cycle travel which is very popular in Denmark. I guess it helps that it is quite flat.

Aarhus - Denmark

 Europe-Denmark-Aarhus .
The second largest city in Denmark. First time here. Especially known for modern buildings and architectural landmarks that were built centuries ago. This is a card by Martin Schwartz .

I was in Aarhus for a few days work. I could not find any postcards and this card I purchased as the main art gallery in the city. I did manage to find the main post office which was in a Supermarket. A few stamps to choose from. However , it was only after when I realised the price of the stamp. 36KR = €4.84. Certainly the most expensive postage to send a postcard within Europe .

Frankfurt Airport and Denmark

Europe-Germany-Frankfurt Airport  It is not often you see a aircraft on here. I do have a great interest in planes, but don't tend to mention it here. This is the Airbus A330-300 , the type of aircraft I flew with Lufthansa from Addis Ababa back to Dublin via Frankfurt. I have often used Frankfurt as a transit as a very efficient airport .

Visited the Post Office at the airport. I was quite amused by this stamp . Not many countries would put a charity stamp showing two naked men in a bath..

Europe-Denmark-Billund  I have been a regular visitor to Denmark, mostly for work reasons. Here are a selection of Danish scenes.

I have never had much joy trying to get interesting stamps when in Denmark. This was a new definitive type I had not seen before.

Europe

Europe-Germany-Frankfurt  Arriving at Frankfurt from my trip down under. Here is a shot of Terminal one. I have used Frankfurt a number of times for Transit a excellent airport.

A standard Definitive stamp , but I do like the WWF advert.

Europe-Denmark-Roskilde  Was in Denmark for work, so took the time to go and visit Roskilde a World Heritage site, for the Church which is on the top left . Also very interesting is the Boats that  the Vikings used. The Vikings came to Ireland so very good to see all the history including a boat that was found in Dublin.

Posted in Roskilde . Where does one find nice Danish stamps???

Europe-United Kingdom-Norwich  A very old and quaint part of England

A standard Definitive stamp , but at least a good postmark.

Denmark, Madeira and France 3 World Heritage Sites.

Europe-Denmark-Jelling  This is a World Heritage site where previous Kings of Denmark are buried.

Getting a good selection of stamps in Denmark is not easy. Posted in Jelling in Jutland.

Atlantic Ocean-Madeira-Levadas Funchal  My second time to visit. This time I did the walk of the Levadas. It is exactly like these pictures on the Postcard. There are no white sandy beaches on the main Island so one must relax by hotel  swimming pools.

Portugal issues stamps especially for Madeira . However at the main Post office in Funchal in Madeira they were issuing regular Portuguese stamps. I had to go to the Philatelic section to get Madeira stamps . You will see the   Madeira under the Portugal name on the stamp .

Europe-France-Mont Saint Michel  A great World Heritage site to visit. But if you want to pay for the most expensive pancakes in the world this is the place. I stumbled into a pancake restaurant and enjoyed the pancake. I was wondering why loads of Japenese tourists were taking my photo. I was the only one eating. I then noticed all the famous people like Prime Ministers who had eaten here as there photos was on the wall. One Pancake = 40 Euro.. The story is much longer then this, but I wont bore you with the details only to say the restaurant did a deal when they seen how shocked I was.

Here we see the A380 Airbus. The postcard has a double postmark one from France and another from Ireland. I have not as yet been on a A380. So look forward to the day.

Denmark and United Kingdom

Europe-Denmark-Herning   Herning is in Jutland. Here for work. Compared to Dublin chalk and cheese. Walking around  in the evening everything closes early. This is the shopping street at night. Exactly as I found it , empty..

As I have said before getting special stamps in Denmark, is not easy. So here is the standard definitive issue. This is also my last postcard from 2006.

Europe-United Kingdom-York   A famous old town as it says in the postcard. Very English as we would  say in Ireland.

This stamps shows a album cover by the Beatles . As they cross Abbey road in London. Zebra crossings as they are  known are really a thing of the past, but this one is kept for the very reason you see on the stamp. I have crossed this road. On a busy summers day can be quite busy with Japanese tourists trying to cross the road like the  Beatles. This is my first postcard of 2007. This year is one with most new countries for me, so lots of interesting postcards to be shown.

Europe

Europe-Belgium-Brussels  Grand Place the famous central square of Brussels. It is also a worthy World Heritage site. Magnificent. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe. Brussels, if you are not careful, can be expensive. It is the headquarters of the European Union. A real foodie place not to mention the chocolate! A World Heritage Site.

This stamp has a double postmark. The first is the postmark in Brussels, you can see the circular postmark. The second is an Irish mail postmark. Not sure why that happens. Trying to find a post office in Brussels that sells stamps other than a definitive was not easy. They always seem to be closed or a holiday when I am in Brussels.

Europe-Luxembourg-Luxembourg  Well had a good day in this city. Good to walk around and discovered that Luxembourg has its own language, Luxembourgish. You see you learn something new every day. I had a very good lunch there too. Lots of Michelin star restaurants around. A World Heritage Site.

What a crystal clear postmark Luxembourg has. The postcard was sent from the Central Post Office in Luxembourg .

Europe-Denmark-Silkeborg  City in the centre of Denmark.

Here you will see a special stamp from Denmark. Most of my Denmark stamps are just definitive.

Europe-Denmark-Esbjerg  On the West coast of Denmark. Just passed through as was working near by.

Danish definitive stamp with the Queen.

Ceuta,Morocco,Ireland,Denmark

Africa-Ceuta -Morocco Spanish  Spent two pleasant days here. When  in  Morocco I drove a hired car . Though that is a story in itself. I hired a car in Tangier and was told I was not insured to drive into Ceuta. My plan was to drive to the border and park the car. I would  manage in Ceuta without the car. But when I got to the border I could not find a parking space. So I filled in all the necessary border forms for entering the European Union  and  then just  drove the car into Ceuta. It is quite small about 18km in total size. Very nice especially the old part of the town. Not many people know that the European Union is also in Africa!

This is a label stamp which is very common in Spain. I generally  try not to use them. The Post office in Ceuta  had only this stamp as the Philatelic section was on " lunch ". More like a long lunch. However the Stamp itself commemorates the  tragedy of the Madrid train victims of 11 March 2004.

Africa-Morocco-Tangier  This was my stop on my Moroccan adventure. In fact I remember most of those scenes on the Postcard. I only discovered recently that the hotel I stayed at in Tangier was the one used as the basis for Rick's Cafe  in Casablanca, El Minzah . Very hard to get around without getting the locals offering to bring you to this shop and then to more Rug shops. I think half the time the shop sellers are out on the streets looking for tourists, trying to entice them into their shops.  Such is this part of Morocco.

Nice to get different shape stamps. This is a Octagon sided stamp. I think my only one .

Europe-Ireland-Dublin  Well my first Postcard here from my home town Dublin. We have the statue of Molly Malone on the top. Two doors from Georgian Dublin. Bottom right is the Halfpenny bridge. I have crossed this many times. In fact my first business was right beside this bridge. So fond memories of there.

This stamp has a special date. One it is a first day of issue for this stamp. Issued to celebrate EU accession when  10 new  member states joined. It also is my  birthday , so a good day for lots of reasons.

Europe-Denmark-Copenhagen  The Tivoli Gardens.  What a lively place. It is a famous amusement park and  pleasure garden. You can also find lots of ways to spend your money on different amusements  to try and win a cuddly toy or such like. I think I won a pen once, but was hardly worth what I had spent on the game. Still fun was had. Very nice steak house beside the gardens. Always make a bee line for there when I am in Copenhagen. Been there many times. First time in the late 80s at the Badminton World Championships. Many fond memories.

Always difficult to find special stamps in Denmark. This is the definitive issue with  Queen  Margrethe
.
