Nice France

Europe-France-Nice Spend a pleasant few days here. My second time and seen a lot more this time to see. The old town is very attractive and the prices for eating out are cheaper then Dublin !

No selection of stamps at the Post office. But had not realised that the main Post office was beside the train station. Second time recently to have a stamp with a bar code . The first one was Germany on my recent trip.

Paris France

Europe-France-Paris What is not to like about Paris. It is special in so many ways. Delighted to be back and spending a couple of days prior to my departure to French Polynesia

The Post office near the Bourse is excellent. It is not big, but has a philatelic display and easy to select what stamps you want. Loved this miniature sheet featuring windows of Notre Dame.

Paris and Barcelona

Europe-France-Paris  I have for some time wanted to visit the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris. I had always been to busy. Well this time I managed to find the time. What a wonderful museum and you feel like you are walking through the world of Culture. So much to see. The African and Pacific displays were excellent.

Edward Hopper is an American artist and I gone to see a display in London a few years back. So great to see that France issued a stamp .

Europe-Spain-Barcelona  I have been to Barcelona more times then I can count. The Casa Batllo I had passed many times, taken photos but never gone inside. So this time I did and took a tour. A fabulous building in so many ways. Part of the World Heritage site of Gaudi.

Finding Post offices with special stamps in Spain is not easy. On a future trip I did manage to find the Head Post office and get a selection of stamps.

French World Heritage Sites

Europe-France-Bourges  France is famous for Cathedrals and this is a superb one . I found the outside more exciting then the inside . A World Heritage Site.

I am always impressed with La Post who always have a selection of special stamps on sale.

Europe-France-Le Havre  Le Havre was destroyed in the Second World War. Between 1945 and 1964 it was rebuild along modern lines. It reflected the old but took into account new city planning. Not often you get a rebuilt city as a World Heritage Site.

A very clear postmark even if it only has the code system and not the city name in the cancellation.

France and Germany

Europe-France-Beauvais  Catching a Ryanair flight back to Dublin. Beauvais is the low lost airport .

French stamps are so nice. Here is a one printed in recess.

Europe-Germany-Bacharach   On the Rhein a very  nice village. Enjoyed the look and the feel of this old village. This area is a World Heritage Site.

In these small towns the Post office and the shop is one and the same.

United Kingdom and France

Europe-United Kingdom-Bournemouth  In the South of England. Went to visit some friends. A typical English seaside town with a large proportion of retirees.

Here at least is a sort of clear postmark and a stamp featuring the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London

Europe-France-Nancy What a wonderful place this is. The gates on the Postcard are a brilliant sight in Gold. A Well deserved World Heritage Site.

Nice to have a circular stamp , which is now more common in use .

France and Russia - World Heritage Sites.

Europe-France-Provins A beautiful medieval town and a World Heritage Site. This is the sort of town that makes France what it is . Full of charm. Well at least the old towns are..

I have to give France 10 out of 10 for their Art stamps. They are exceptional. France is also not afraid to issue large stamps. If many of them see general usage I would doubt.

Europe-Russia-Kolomenskose   I was on a tour of World Heritage sites in Russia. So  here was my first stop. Old Wooden churches. Not far fro Moscow.

Russia issue some marvellous stamps. I have a complete Russian collection from 1917, so I do admire the stamps. Here is also a very nice cancellation.

England and France

Europe-United Kingdom-England-Nottingham   Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood the famous outlaw in English culture who "robbed from the rich and gave to the poor".. I was here to visit some friends and did visit the historic sites. I do recall sitting in a famous old pub "Ye old trip to Jerusalem " considered to be maybe the oldest pub in England from 1189.

Here is James the IV from England on the stamp. I wonder did he pop into this pub for a drink? At least a cancellation here on the stamp.

Europe-France-Amiens The main feature here is the World Heritage Site Cathedral . Very impressive. But so is the whole town. Not too far from Paris .

A clear cancellation. A French Definitive stamp.

Germany and France - World Heritage Sites.

Two regular definitive stamps with a clear postmark

Europe-France-Reims The Cathedral in Reims, a large magnificent site. Also a World Heritage Site.

A stamp  from a miniature sheet .

Denmark, Madeira and France 3 World Heritage Sites.

Europe-Denmark-Jelling  This is a World Heritage site where previous Kings of Denmark are buried.

Getting a good selection of stamps in Denmark is not easy. Posted in Jelling in Jutland.

Atlantic Ocean-Madeira-Levadas Funchal  My second time to visit. This time I did the walk of the Levadas. It is exactly like these pictures on the Postcard. There are no white sandy beaches on the main Island so one must relax by hotel  swimming pools.

Portugal issues stamps especially for Madeira . However at the main Post office in Funchal in Madeira they were issuing regular Portuguese stamps. I had to go to the Philatelic section to get Madeira stamps . You will see the   Madeira under the Portugal name on the stamp .

Europe-France-Mont Saint Michel  A great World Heritage site to visit. But if you want to pay for the most expensive pancakes in the world this is the place. I stumbled into a pancake restaurant and enjoyed the pancake. I was wondering why loads of Japenese tourists were taking my photo. I was the only one eating. I then noticed all the famous people like Prime Ministers who had eaten here as there photos was on the wall. One Pancake = 40 Euro.. The story is much longer then this, but I wont bore you with the details only to say the restaurant did a deal when they seen how shocked I was.

Here we see the A380 Airbus. The postcard has a double postmark one from France and another from Ireland. I have not as yet been on a A380. So look forward to the day.

France and Council of Europe

Europe-Germany-Baden-Baden   This is the starting point for this little trip. Arrived in Baden Baden courtesy of Ryanair. Ireland's famous low cost carrier. Well not always low cost if you plan on having baggage !! So here is a pic of the Railway station which is all I did see of this place.

Always nice to see the crisp postmarks of certain countries. Germany being one.

Europe-France-Strasbourg   Getting closer to my destination on this trip. Strasbourg is a delightful city. A well deserved World Heritage site. Situated in a very picturesque location . One of the best cities to visit in France.

A very interesting stamp showing integration . I do like the design

Europe-Council of Europe-Strasbourg   Well here is the reason for my visit . The Council of Europe in Strasbourg. I had been planning a visit here for some time , but could only get access when the council of Europe is in session. So I had to arrange this trip  at the right time.

Inside the Council of Europe building is a Post office. Here you can purchase the  special Council of Europe stamps. So note the postmark has " Conseil  de L'Europe Strasbourg".. No France like the above postmark on the Strasbourg postcard. You get a special pass when you register once you tell them the reason for your visit . The security officer did look a little surprised when I told him I was visiting the Post Office. In fact the Post office here had a very large selection of special covers and stamps all relating to Council of Europe

Europe

Europe-United Kingdom-Plymouth   Did not see much of Plymouth as here for work.

Interesting that the stamp has a theme of ships bearing in mind this is Plymouth which is associated with the sea

Europe-France-Saint Malo  Right on the Brittany coast. The hotel itself is very nice and is famous for its thermal baths.

Just a basic French definitive stamp here.

Europe-France-Plancoet   This is a very nice village in Brittany. There is a Michelin  star restaurant here in this village. I was taken out to lunch here . A special experience

Well more food this time on the Europa stamp on the right. A very nice clean postmark.
