2 World Heritage Sites in England

Europe-United Kingdom-Fountains Abbey   In Middle England , as I would say. A beautiful World Heritage site to visit. Buildings partly destroyed by Cromwell, but still such a lot to see and really enjoyed the walk here.

I rarely put a a postcard in my collection unless it has a postmark. In the UK it happens quite a lot that the mail does not get postmarked. But I enjoyed this visit so much that I had to keep it.

Europe-United Kingdom-Durham  Now in the North of England . Durham Cathedral a World Heritage Site. My favourite Cathedral in England. Great Pillars inside and nice just to sit and take it all in.

More Kings of England and again happy that this one got a postmark.

World Heritage and United Kingdom

Europe-United Kingdom-Souhwold  On the east coast of England, the little wooden summer houses on the top left are famous here.

I suspect the postmark is Ipswich, but cant really tell for sure.

Europe-United Kingdom-Liverpool  On the west coast of England . Liverpool is famous for Football, The Beatles and the maritime area and museum. Here is the Albert Dock which is a World Heritage Site due to the big effect it had on shipping and also where a lot of the slave trade came in to England. A very good museum here.

Here is a Miniature sheet . I see just the edge got cancelled and not the stamps.

Europe-United Kingdom-Saltaire   A very famous Mill in Saltaire . The Mill and the surrounding small houses are all a World Heritage Site. This was a very important place during the Industrial revolution.

Here we have some more Kings of England as they were at the time.

Europe

Europe-Germany-Frankfurt  Arriving at Frankfurt from my trip down under. Here is a shot of Terminal one. I have used Frankfurt a number of times for Transit a excellent airport.

A standard Definitive stamp , but I do like the WWF advert.

Europe-Denmark-Roskilde  Was in Denmark for work, so took the time to go and visit Roskilde a World Heritage site, for the Church which is on the top left . Also very interesting is the Boats that  the Vikings used. The Vikings came to Ireland so very good to see all the history including a boat that was found in Dublin.

Posted in Roskilde . Where does one find nice Danish stamps???

Europe-United Kingdom-Norwich  A very old and quaint part of England

A standard Definitive stamp , but at least a good postmark.

Lord Howe Island, Australia and 3 World Heritage Sites.

Pacific Ocean-Lord Howe Island  What a Beautiful Island to visit. It has all you want, with great beaches and just an amazing place. It is quite an expensive flight from Sydney but worth it. This Island is also a World Heritage Site. The hotel gave me a Bicycle to get around. Good way to see the Island, but oh my ,my legs did hurt. Have not cycled in years ! Somehow the pain was worth it. An Outstanding Island.

Lord Howe Issues its own local courier stamps, for use in local mail. So here we have the courier stamps on the left. The next day to the Post office and sent international from there. Very nice postmark.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Sydney  The Iconic Opera House , also a World Heritage site. I had been in here a number of times in the past. The red sky you see here is the same colour I did see when in Tasmania. Sydney one of my favourite cities in the world.

This stamp features the Royal Exhibition Hall in Melbourne which is also a World Heritage site. I have not visited that hall as when I was in Melbourne previously it was not inscribed then.  A laser printed postmark. Not very fond of those postmarks.

Pacific Ocean-Australia-Katoomba  This is the Blue Mountains. I had wanted to visit before but never got the chance. You have a mix of the Cable car and the Railway which is quite steep. Still some great views and glad I visited. Also a World Heritage Site.

Another laser printed Postmark. Posted in a mail box at the Blue Mountains.

Tasmania and Cradle Mountain

Pacific Ocean-Tasmania-Hobart   Hobart the capital of Tasmania. Arrived here by ship from the Antarctica voyage and a great way to arrive . Just like the picture on the bottom left of the postcard.

It had been 8 years since last time in Australia. So noticed a updated look for the Post offices. So a selection of stamps was available. Here you see a Hobart postmark.

Pacific Ocean-Tasmania-Cradle Mountain   Driving to Cradle Mountain which is in the middle of the Island slightly north was amazing. One of those drives you will never forget. First of all you had the different sky colours , changing including orange and red colours. The different textures and colour of the land. Then driving through a National Park and seeing Wallaby's and many different animals. This area is part of Tasmania Wilderness which is a World Heritage site. A must see place.

This Postcard has a hand-stamp. Really like these Australian stamps.

Pacific Ocean-Tasmania-Cradle Mountain   This is where I stayed . You are surrounded my trees and nature. From your bedroom  window you had a view into the forest and at night , it was like being in the Zoo looking and spotting the wildlife.

Another beautiful stamp from Australia.

Pacific Ocean-Tasmania-Launceston  My final stop in Tasmania. Remember seeing many of these sights including the Gorge which is on the top left on the postcard. A great way to see Tasmania from Hobart to Launceston with Cradle Mountain in between.

Finishing this set off with a Koala Bear. I see this postcard has a Hobart postmark for some reason. I guess they sent the mail there for processing.

Ross Dependency- McMurdo Station and Australian Antarctic Territory

Antarctica-Ross Dependency-Scott Base  Getting into the Ross Sea and arriving here is far from a done deal.Without any doubt the hardest part of Antarctica to get to if youare coming by ship.  It is a very slow process getting through the packed Ice. This was a five week trip. Landing in the New Zealand part of Antarctica. We had a New Zealand ranger with us where we landed. A group of about 80 on this trip. What you get to see on the landings are the famous wooden huts that are preserved from the days of the early Expeditions in the early 1900s. They still have food, Drink newspapers. The New Zealand government do a great job minding these very special historic buildings. Arriving in Scott Base, again was not easy . One of the helicopters had been grounded so we only had one go get from ship to shore. So it was a risk. But thankfully all went well.

The first tourist ship to get here in 2 years. The previous ship which went 4 weeks prior to this had to turn back. So I was privileged to get here. Some passengers on the ship, this was there 3rd time and was the only time they had made it this far. When you visit Scott Base the New Zealand crew are so friendly and you can see all around. There is a small shop, with a Post box. You can buy stamps and souvenirs here. There has not been a Post office here for many many years. So I knew the mail would be sent back to Christchurch for processing. On the left is a Rubber stamp mark I put on myself as it was right beside the Post box. I sent this on 15 February 2008 and it got postmarked in Christchurch on 18 February 2008. So that was very quick. The runway is shared with the American Base.

Antarctica-McMurdo Station   This is the American Base at McMurdo. You could walk between the two bases the New Zealand and the American base. But got a lift from a New Zealander . The base here is chalk and cheese compared to the New Zealand base. Every mod con you could think off . A much bigger base here . We had a tour of the base which is very interesting ,many parts were off limits. We were the first tourists in 2 years.

I had not brought American stamps with me as my main focus on this trip was to get to Scott Base . Unfortunately as this was coming towards the end of the season in February the shop had run out of Stamps. And also the last American plane to take mail back had left. So my postcard was to sit here until the next season and the stamps arrived. I had to get someone to look after my card. You can see even though it was posted on February 15, it ended up being postmarked on October 9, when the next mailing went out.

Antarctica-McMurdo Station   This is The Chapel of the Snows serving the needs of the community at Mc Murdo Station. So we visited here and there is even a fire truck here. Like a small town. Very impressive.

I have left this information intact here. Again I had to leave this card and wait for it to get posted. I had no idea I would get anything written on the card.

Antarctica-Australian Antarctic Territory-Macquarie Island   A fantastic Island to visit. This is really sub Antarctica. Here you learn about the moving land plates that makes this place unique. Lots of wildlife. This was on the way back towards Tasmania. This Island is also  a World Heritage Site. Here you can see a photo of the Settlement on Macquarie Island. There is no permanent population here. But people all year around .

I again had left the full back of the postcard for you to see. Reason is the extra makes on the back. One showing Seals and the other Bird life. There is a Post office here which is inside the Cafe and shop. The stamps sold are all Australian Antarctic Territory .
